Menstrual Hygiene in Rural India

As per NFHS-5 (2019–21), only 43% of adolescent girls (aged 15–19) in rural India use hygienic menstrual products like sanitary pads, tampons, or menstrual cups.

This is significantly lower than 68% in urban areas.

Key reasons for low usage include:

Lack of awareness

Poor access to affordable products

Social stigma and taboos

Limited education and outreach

Solution: Increasing menstrual health education, ensuring pad availability in schools, and community awareness programs can help bridge this gap and promote better hygiene and dignity for rural girls.

We at Temperance Welfare Foundation are proud to share that we have successfully distributed over 100,000 sanitary pads to women and girls in need, working towards improving their health, hygiene, and dignity.
This isn’t just a number — it represents 100,000 smiles, 100,000 safe periods, and 100,000 steps toward empowerment.

At Temperance Welfare Foundation, we believe that awareness is the first step toward empowerment.
We have successfully conducted 54+ workshops in rural villages and door-to-door awareness drives to educate young girls and women about:

- The importance of menstrual hygiene
- How to use sanitary pads properly
- The health benefits of safe period practices

At Temperance Welfare Foundation, we’re changing that — through awareness drives, sanitary pad distribution, and education.
We empower girls to understand their bodies, overcome shame, and continue their education with confidence.

Temperance Welfare Foundation is actively collaborating with school management teams to ensure that girls receive free sanitary pads directly in schools.
By making menstrual hygiene accessible within the school environment, we are helping girls stay in school, stay healthy, and grow with dignity.
Together, we are building period-friendly campuses.

Free Sanitary Pad Distribution

Understanding the financial barrier to menstrual hygiene, especially in low-income families, the Foundation also provides free sanitary pads to adolescent girls on a regular basis. These pads are:

Safe, hygienic, and easy to use

Packed and distributed discreetly to maintain comfort

Often given along with basic hygiene kits (soap, disposal instructions, etc.)

So far, hundreds of girls have benefited from this initiative, gaining not only access to sanitary products but also knowledge that will stay with them for life.

The Way Forward

The Foundation aims to:

· Expand this program to more villages and schools.

· Distribute pads to at least 10,000 girls annually

· Collaborate with health workers and local NGOs.

· Introduce low-cost, eco-friendly pad production for sustainability
